Ephesians 5:1-6 NLT
Living in the Light
5 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.
Believers are to imitate God! Wow! That is an overwhelming thought isn’t it? The Apostle Paul starts by sharing some specific areas that we might better imitate God with our lives by paying attention to: any sexual immorality, a greedy love for money, and improper language flowing from our mouths that does not reflect God’s gracious presence in us. This is how we love God; we imitate him. The world tempts us to fulfill our flesh; to be slaves to the demands of our desires. But, what if life is really more about fulfilling God’s plan for the world; and our lives being a pleasing aroma to him because we are willing to sacrifice what we desire for what God requires? I believe this as Truth and, in Christ, becomes every believer’s commission. May we never make life about us; instead, may we make life about the Life Giver and worship him with every aspect of our lives.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for your teaching and helping me follow your example. I have a long way to go, but each day I look forward to emulating you better. Holy Spirit, take charge and lead the way. I pray for our American family along the Gulf coast that have suffered from hurricane Laura. Help us to come together as a country to be the hands and hearts they need for restoration. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
