Shamgar Son of Anath: The Third Judge

We continue our study with the Book of Judges by moving further into Chapter 3. We are following a six-week Bible Study by Katie M. Reid entitled, “God, What Do I do?” This study is based on the Book of Judges, Chapters 1-5, and we are digging into what these lessons teach us about making wise decisions in uncertain times.

Today, we are studying Judges 3:31 and our focus is, “God, What Do I Do Next?”

Much of our lives is lived out doing ordinary things; attending to tasks that are necessary. Yet, in the hands of God, our lives can be extraordinary and accomplish much more than we can even imagine. Such is the case with judge Shamgar who was busy taking care of oxen when God called upon his bravery to do the extraordinary.

Shamgar used a goad to prod, train, and protect stubborn animals. A goad is a 6-8 foot long stick with a pointed end. This intrustment was used by farmers to train oxen to move in a straight line. The goad poked at the shoulder, not hurting the animal, but showing them the way and keeping them from wandering off on their own.

Scripture teaches us God’s Word is like a goad guiding us and keeping us moving in the right direction. Jesus uses this analogy when he meets Saul on the road to Damascus and challenges him not to resist God’s will (Acts 26:14). Scripture convicts us, prompts action, and guides us along the narrow path of Christ’s righteousness. Our faith must grow and we must learn how to defeat our enemy—evil. We should be grateful for the goad of God guiding our lives.

Judges 3:31 NLT Shamgar Becomes Israel’s Judge
31 After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath rescued Israel. He once killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad.

Truth: When you don’t know what to do next, decide to endure in the cause of Christ as you carry out your daily tasks. Do the ordinary with extraordinary faith.
Prayer: Father, thank You for this reminder from judge Shamgar; a man who carried out his tasks in a way that honored You. Thank You for the armor that guards and protects our lives. You help us endure and remain faithful. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
