Psalm 133  New Living Translation (NLT)

Yesterday we looked at our passage from the perspective of harmony and its connection to love.  Harmony is achieved when we stay focused on what is important to God.  Today, please read the passage, again, and this time when you read verse one and the word “brothers” think about the word “family.”

Psalm 133

How wonderful and pleasant it is

when brothers live together in harmony!

For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil

that was poured over Aaron’s head,

    that ran down his beard

and onto the border of his robe.

Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon

that falls on the mountains of Zion.

And there the Lord has pronounced his blessing,

    even life everlasting.

At first glance a person might think this passage is about the nuclear family or perhaps the extended family, but in its proper context the message about family describes the people who were “kin” through the Lord’s covenant—people who would allow God to form them into a holy family for His glory.  In other words, this passage is about spiritual brothers and sisters coming together in harmony for worship celebrations.  For these people in our passage, the covenant bound them together and the Presence of God brought them together.  In that unified place the people of the Lord received everlasting or abundant life—this place is the supreme family value.  The blessing (divine favor) of the Lord comes to those who are gathered by His Presence.  God is working to build a harmonious family that transcends all the usual barriers that separate people.  Beyond the barrier we find eternal life, together.

Prayer:  Lord, I love Your family!  Thank You for binding me together with other family members through the covenant and bringing us all together by Your Presence.  Open my eyes and help me see others who operate in eternal life; I want to recognize Your family.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
